ABOUT THE SETTING //
Andrew Carnegie, businessman and philanthropist, often credited his success to a neighbor who allowed the young Scottish immigrant access to a personal library. That early exposure to big ideas shaped Carnegie’s ambitions, and he realized them. He went on to fund nearly 1,700 public libraries across the country, including here in Hawai‘i, where his $100,000 gift helped build the Hawai‘i State Library in 1913.
Today, the Hawai‘i State Public Library System includes 51 branches across six islands and two bookmobiles. Our libraries continue to evolve, ensuring equitable access to information, ideas, stories, learning, technology and welcoming spaces to gather. Hawai‘i’s public libraries are free, inclusive, safe, and cherished community anchors.
Consider this your invitation to be curious — to read, learn, and connect at your local public library.
