Macan It Happen

When most people think of a Porsche, the image of a sleek, rear-engine, low-slung sports car often comes to mind. This iconic design, embodied by models like the 911, has long defined the brand’s identity. However, as consumer preferences have shifted, Porsche, like much of the automotive world, has embraced the SUV market. Today, the brand’s SUVs lead its sales charts, with the Macan — its five-passenger compact SUV — taking the crown as Porsche’s best-selling model. To further strengthen its position, Porsche has introduced the Macan EV, a fully electric version of the popular SUV.

The Macan EV lineup features several sub-models, each distinguished by power and price. The entry-level model comes equipped with a single electric motor producing 355 horsepower. For those seeking more power, the dual-motor version (our test model) offers 402 horsepower and all-wheel drive, thanks to motors on both the front and rear axles. Enthusiasts looking for top-tier performance can opt for models boasting either 509 or 630 horsepower. As is typical for electric vehicles, there is no traditional transmission; the electric motors deliver seamless power without the need for gear changes.

Styling-wise, the Macan EV stays true to Porsche’s design heritage. The front end is sleek and purposeful, with a low hood line that integrates neatly with the slim headlights. Unlike internal combustion models, the Macan EV doesn’t require a radiator, so the front fascia features only small, discreet air intakes. Massive alloy wheels with low-profile tires reinforce its sporty credentials, giving it a stance that echoes Porsche’s performance cars. The roofline slopes gently toward the rear, culminating in a well-integrated liftgate. Despite being an SUV, the Macan EV’s design stands out in its segment, blending practicality with unmistakable Porsche styling.

Approaching the Macan with the remote key in your possession triggers a subtle welcome: the side mirrors swing open, and the driver’s door unlocks automatically. Once inside, the cabin delivers a premium experience. The front seats, upholstered in high-quality leather, offer robust side bolsters to keep occupants secure during spirited driving. The dashboard features two large screens — a digital gauge cluster and a central touchscreen. The gauge cluster not only displays the speedometer but also battery charge status and four driving modes: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Offroad. The larger central touchscreen handles an array of functions, including navigation with detailed maps, audio controls, and battery information. Thankfully, Porsche has retained physical buttons and dials for climate control, allowing for intuitive adjustments without fumbling through menus.

The rear seats maintain the luxurious leather theme, offering space for up to three passengers. While the rear area may feel snug for larger adults, it provides adequate comfort for most passengers. A fold-down armrest with integrated cupholders adds convenience, while rear air vents and a dedicated climate control system enhance passenger comfort. The Macan EV also comes with a panoramic sunroof, complete with a powered sunshade that floods the cabin with natural light. Cargo space, though not expansive, is practical. The rear seats fold flat to accommodate larger items, and a 115-volt power outlet in the cargo area highlights the vehicle’s versatile EV design. The powered liftgate, operable via the key fob, further adds to the convenience.

Beyond its practicality, the real joy of the Macan lies in driving it. Like other EVs, the first thing you’ll notice is the silence — the electric motors operate with near-total quietness. Another hallmark of EVs is instant acceleration. This model goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, while the top-of-the-line Turbo model achieves the same in a breathtaking 3.1 seconds. The suspension system can be adjusted to various modes, offering a smooth ride over rough pavement and excellent handling and cornering capabilities.

Ultimately, it’s easy to see why the Macan is Porsche’s best-selling model. It combines the brand’s iconic design and performance with the practicality and innovation of an electric SUV.
