Scottish Standout

As the birthplace of golf, Scotland has a plentiful supply of legendary courses. Creating a golf course that can stand out among the options is no small feat, but that is precisely what SCHLOSS Roxburghe Golf Course has done. Designed by renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas, this par-72 course is nestled into the grounds of the SCHLOSS Roxburghe estate in the Scottish Borders. Noted for its deep bun- kers, rolling greens and regal views of the 50,000-acre estate, this course con- sistently earns a spot in Scotland's Top 10 inland golf courses. Readers of Bun- kered, Scotland's leading golf magazine, even voted it the sixth best golf course in all of Scotland.

RICH WITH HISTORY

The Floors Castle — now open for public visits, castle tours, festivals and more — is central to the history of the course. Although it was built in the 1720s for John Ker, the first Duke of Roxburghe, it was the 10th Duke, Guy Innes-Ker, who was key in developing the golf course. A golfer himself, he commissioned the course and opened it to the public after an inaugural exhibition match between Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie.

Since then, it has become a regal part of Scotland's golfing offerings and, from 2001 to 2005, was home to the Scottish Seniors Open. In 2018, 12.18. Investment Group from Germany purchased the property and added hotel rooms, a spa and private lodges, making the newly christened SCHLOSS Roxburghe a true luxury destination.

PLAYING A ROUND

Golfers of all skill levels will find the course challenging — but fairly forgiving. Thomas made good use of the land’s natural beauty, incorporating numerous elevation changes, his signature deep bunkers and large sloping greens.

While all the holes have their own story to tell, the signa- ture par-5 hole is truly unforgettable. Named “the Viaduct,” the 14th hole is bounded by River Teviot and a steep bank on the left, running the entire length of the hole, with the Roxburghe Viaduct looming in the background for added visual effect — or intimidation.

It’s the perfect combination of aesthetic beauty and techni- cal challenges, requiring concentration, precision and perhaps a little luck. Not surprisingly, it’s also one of the most frequent- ly photographed and featured holes in Scotland golf guides.

For those looking to improve their game, the resort offers programs that include practice facilities for junior golfers, complete with a PGA assistant professional. The “Wee Roxy” complimentary membership gives players under 14 a positive introduction to the sport.

The one-on-one Golf Tuition program is a high-tech way to fine-tune your technique using the SCHLOSS Roxburghe driving range. The facility features GCQuad and Toptracer technology to track and analyze every shot in real time, provid- ing data-driven insights for improvement.

AFTER THE GAME

As a complete luxury resort, SCHLOSS Roxburghe offers plenty of experiences off the course. Food and beverage lovers can enjoy whisky tastings, a distillery tour, afternoon tea and more.

Leisure options range from fishing, clay pigeon shooting and archery to wildlife watching. Wellness seekers can unwind in the outdoor heated infinity pool, saunas and steam rooms, or enjoy massages, facials and holistic therapies in the spa. Outdoor enthusiasts will find ample hiking and nature walks nearby.

DELIGHTFUL DINING

SCHLOSS Roxburghe sources all food sustainably from the best local produce, often from the estate itself. From casual to fine dining, the restaurants cater to every taste.

At Sunlaws, guests can enjoy upscale dining that celebrates Scotland’s rich history — with boundary-pushing flair from Chef Dan Ashmore. Charlie’s offers “Scottish bistronomy” in a relaxed set- ting, plus Charlie’s Terrace for salads, pizzas, grilled fare and desserts. Bar 1745 is a quaint whisky and gin bar, while the State Room Lounge offers a sophisticated retreat for fine wine or cocktails — perfect to start or end the evening.
