ABOUT THE SETTING // QUEEN EMMA SUMMER PALACE
Five minutes by car from the center of Downtown Honolulu stands the summer retreat once occupied
by Queen Emma of Hawai‘i, consort to King Kamehameha IV, one of the last ruling monarchs of the Kamehameha dynasty. Now a historic house museum dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of the royal family, Hānaiakamalama, known today as Queen Emma Summer Palace, is a timeless symbol of classic Hawaiian elegance and contemporary style. Originally built in 1847, the Daughters of Hawai‘i acquired the secluded Nu‘uanu Valley mountain-home in 1915, along with 22,750 square feet of the grounds. As one of the three remaining royal palaces in the islands, the Daughters of Hawai‘i operate and maintain the landmark, including its exhibits and artifacts, offering visitors an opportunity to rediscover the rich legacy of Hawai‘i’s ali‘i during the monarchy period.
