Refilled to the Brim

Jason Momoa may be known for his iconic work on the big screen, but his first passion is the role he plays off-screen as an environmentalist committed to eliminating single-use waste, reducing carbon impact, and ultimately protecting the planet.

“I’m just trying to leave a better place for my children,” he says.

In 2019, Momoa launched his Mananalu water company, inspiring an industry-wide shift toward aluminum bottles instead of single-use plastic. Then, last year, he announced the company’s exclusive partnership with Boomerang Water, featuring a game-changing back-of-house, progressive on-site bottling system that can sanitize, rinse, fill and cap 400 to 500 aluminum or glass bottles per hour with ultra-purified water. These bottles are then returned to the same machine for reuse after consumption, making the system fully sustainable.

Relaunching as Mananalu Powered by Boomerang Water, the company has been working to bring its breakthrough technology to hotels, schools, and businesses throughout Hawai‘i. Among its first hospitality partners are The Twin Fin Hotel, Romer House Waikīkī, Kaimana Beach Hotel, ‘Alohilani Resort Waikīkī Beach, Halekulani, Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and Four Seasons Resort Hualālai. They also have a partnership with Kamehameha Schools, where Momoa made a surprise visit to its Kapālama campus to introduce the new sustainable bottling system to students.

“There are a lot of causes I want to tackle ... I really sunk my teeth into single-use plastic because I couldn’t take it anymore,” notes Momoa. “The anxiety for me was just too much.”

Prior to partnering with Boomerang Water, Momoa admits he had hit some roadblocks in what he had envisioned for his company. His idea was to ship large pallets of empty aluminum bottles worldwide and have them filled straight from local water sources. However, he discovered that bottling water is not as easy as it sounds, and they needed to ship water from different places. But now, with Boomerang Water’s innovative technology, Momoa’s wish to have fresh and filtered water bottled on location at its point of use has come true.

“This is one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to the dream,” he says. “It’s a passion, and being able to tick this off and do it in Hawai‘i — and hopefully make it happen really quick — would be amazing. To be able to say, ‘There are no plastic bottles here, they’re not allowed.’ If I can do that and make that announcement to the world, and do that for small island nations, then do it in Tahiti, do it in Fiji — why not? We should be using our own water source. We can do it. It’s not a dream anymore.”
