Trading Spaces
Who doesn’t love an escape? Your own refuge where the world can’t creep in. Ideally, it’s a haven where you’re surrounded by everything that brings you peace. That concept birthed a plethora of man caves (and she-sheds) of varying varieties over recent years.
Then, 2020 happened. The pandemic, its subsequent lockdowns and work- from-home situations forced many people into their caves—or sheds—regardless of whether they wanted to be there.
That, coupled with the natural evolution of design has led to a different idea behind the creation of these sanctuaries. Eric Henderson, principal and creative director of Hawai‘i- and San Francisco-based Henderson Design Group notes that a sophisticated aesthetic and functionality of spaces are what people are looking for.
“The trends that we’re seeing with the man cave or private retreats are very different from what we’ve seen in the past,” he states. “These spaces are being designed with very much the single user in mind, but it’s also serving as flexible spaces to be shared with friends and family alike.”
“From a quiet space for writing to a game table for playing cards with friends or a comfortable lounge area for watching the latest movies with the family...” Henderson explains that man caves have since become a space that may be centered around one person or purpose, but are not forbidden for others. Fun updates make it easy for the room to move from one focus to another.
Think: the home office that showcases a movie buff’s favorite memorabilia by day that transforms into a viewing room for friends and family by night.
Henderson adds that it’s the details that make these modern-day man caves stand out from any other room in the house. “In many spaces, you’ll find objects and artwork that have been collected during the client’s world travels or maybe ephemera that speaks to their hobbies. When it comes to the furnishings, casual seating with refined fabrics invites intimate moments of lounging and relaxation.
Additionally, well-designed man caves exude sophistication, without feeling stuffy. “The fabrics and finishes used lend themselves to work from day to night no matter what the mood,” he explains. A good audiovisual system blends into the room and goes away when needed with your favorite tunes blending in with conversations amongst friends.
“Also, let’s not forget a well-designed and curated bar with your favorite go-to bottles of spirits and wine making one the most-revered host.
“The man cave will no longer be just singular, but more of a well-rounded experience for the many moods of life.”
