There is no better tome than the Farmers’ Almanac to help define life’s simpler cycles, and here at HILuxury, there is truly no better issue than this one to serve as a reminder of cycles closer to home. As our team puts these pages together, the photography starts to appear, and the stories begin to fall into place — letting us know that we don’t need to tear pages off our calendars to see that our kids have passed the mid-point of their hard-earned summer breaks. The fun camp activities and lazy afternoons will soon wind down as we march onward to the coming school year, but some might say we are lucky in that our seasons seem to change in name only.

Another constant and cyclical season is that of the TV series, which brings us to our cover featuring Kathleen Rose Perkins who plays a main role in the Disney+ show Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., which recently aired its second season. Being a core part of the cast enabled Perkins to spend time in Hawai‘i for extended periods of time, for which she expresses her gratitude for the ability to form lasting ties and develop a sense of community here. For this issue, not only did we get to sit down with Perkins for cover story “Cool in the City” (page 86), but our fashion team also had the opportunity to style her in the season’s latest looks.

Also in thematic lock step within these pages are a few classics (albeit the 2.0 versions), from the reborn Land Rover Defender (“Reinventing an Icon,” page 62) to a designer’s childhood house revisited (“Home Again,” page 80). We then take you on a journey to other side of the globe — the Western Sahara to be exact — to the remote city of Dakhla, where both comfort and kiteboarding await (“The Pursuit of Adventure,” page 104). And for those looking to enjoy a moment of solitude much closer to home, we suggest you give saltwater fly fishing a second look (or perhaps even a first). Find out more in “Casting Call,” on page 110.

Aloha and enjoy the issue,
Margie Jacinto, Publisher
