Watt a Ride

Among Italian auto manufacturers, Lamborghini has long been known for its fantastic high-performance sports cars. But times are changing, and the new Urus PHEV reflects two clear automotive trends. Yes, this Lamborghini is an SUV hybrid that maintains super performance, off-road capability and adds impressive fuel efficiency.
Power comes from an entertaining mix: a twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 developing 620 horsepower, combined with an electric motor adding 192 horsepower. When the electric motor operates in conjunction with the gas engine, the city/highway fuel economy rating is 48 mpg. Besides improving mileage, the electric motor enhances overall performance. The 0 to 60 time is a mere 3.1 seconds, and the top speed is 194 mph. For off-roading, the drivetrain is four-wheel drive with massive 23-inch wheels and tires.
Styling, even in SUV form, is unique in several ways. It clearly says four-door SUV, but with a very sleek body. The low hood and rounded roof that slopes down toward the rear distinguish it from many other SUVs.
The interior is relatively roomy and exudes luxury on all fronts. The leather seats are somewhat unique, with portions color-matched to the exterior. Multiple large full-color video screens line the dash. At the center is a touchscreen for radio, maps and other information. With the push of a button or when the SUV is shifted into reverse, multiple exterior cameras activate, providing both a rear view and a 360-degree view around the vehicle. A screen below the center display controls the four-zone air conditioning system.
The rear seat area is surprisingly roomy for the left and right-side occupants, with plenty of legroom on both sides. The center seat is tighter due to a floor hump. Four air vents handle rear climate control, and storage is available behind the front seats. Charging outlets for cell phones or iPods are also provided. A center armrest with two cupholders can be folded down for added comfort.
The rear liftgate is powered and easily opened or closed with a button on the key fob or a button on the door. A fairly large, nicely lined cargo area is available in the rear, and the rear seatbacks can be folded down for additional storage.
On the road, this SUV is an entertaining mix. At lower speeds, the electric motor propels the SUV in near silence. However, there are six drive settings, ranging from economy to grand prix racing. That means the sound can vary from modest to racecar-like, and the handling can go from soft to track-ready. Even with huge wheels and tires, the ride remains comfortable, even over rough surfaces. But if the driver desires racecar-like handling, the suspension can be adjusted accordingly. In the end, this SUV delivers amazing performance, excellent handling, and everyday utility.
