Color Outside the Box

Whether it’s the restlessness of being at home or the need to spread positivity during a much-needed time, bold, bright hair color choices are filling Instagram feeds and capturing our attention.

“I love when my clients want to mix it up!” says Ashlee Valeros, hair stylist and co-owner of Palm on 8. During lockdown, Valeros provided home kits for her clients. “I had requests for color depositing masks in rose gold, purple and pink. Once we reopened salons, I was getting a lot of my regular clients wanting to add some reds or purples in. ‘Fashion colors,’ as we call them are more high-maintenance and will need home care and touch-ups more frequently,” she explains, adding that she recommends a consult with a colorist.

Alan Vuong, owner of Salon Blanc concurs. “It’s important to have a professional match your skin tone, it’s about creating the trend for the individual,” he says, and recommends his Cool Fashion Color service.” [It] mutes unwanted yellows and oranges, adding depth.”
