Maui Unplugged

The spirit of Hawai‘i is alive and well at Travassa Hana, Maui, where visitors can’t help but enter a “Hana state of mind” as soon as they’re within reach of this dreamy tropical sanctuary. The first resort on the island to greet the sun each morning, Travaasa Hāna, Maui (formerly the iconic Hotel Hana-Maui), is located on the secluded eastern shore and situated at the end of the famous Road to Hana.

Set amid rolling grass fields and groves of palm trees above Hana Bay, Travaasa aims to immerse guests in “the real Hawai‘i.” Ashley Cothran of Travaasa Experiential Resorts says, “The original property opened in 1947 and has since become a favorite retreat for generations of travelers seeking untouched natural beauty and a Hawaiian sense of place.”

Today, Travaasa echoes the hotel’s original intention of letting guests experience something new and immersing them in local tradition, while also focusing on: adventure, cuisine, culture, fitness and spa/wellness. The “Total Travaasa” package offers an inclusive experience, and “Your Travaasa” tailors to those who prefer an à la carte-style vacation.

The resort features 47 plantation-style Ocean Bungalows and 23 low-rise Garden View Suites—all with organic linens and alluring amenities. The sounds of nature reign here, thanks to “unplugged” rooms that come gloriously free of radios, clocks, Internet and TVs. While Ocean Bungalows offer private lanais with panoramic views of the Pacific, Garden Suites have covered porches connected to green spaces, ideal for families.

Cothran’s version of a perfect day here? Watching the sun come up—either leisurely from the lanai of an Ocean Bungalow or, if feeling ambitious, after hiking up to Fagan’s Cross for a bird’s-eye view. Next up: morning yoga and a relaxing breakfast. Afternoons can be spent exploring Hana and adventuring; suggestions include a trip to Hamoa Beach, a tour of Ono Organic Farms and a hike through the bamboo forest. Afterward, folks might enjoy a quick pool dip before getting ready for cocktails and entertainment in the lounge and a fresh, seasonal dinner by chef Bella Toland in The Preserve Kitchen + Bar.

Cothran loves that the resort receives so much praise for the kindness exhibited by its dedicated team. Many employees are local to the community, some even a third-generation addition to the hotel. “They are born and raised in Hana, following in their parents’ and grandparents’ footsteps,” Cothran comments. “Being able to share stories and traditions that are truly authentic to the history of Hana Town is something we are very grateful to provide our guests.”
