Green Getaway

Even without the stunning beaches, Vale do Lobo Algarve would be an exceptional getaway, thanks to the luxurious accommodations, vibrant dining and nightlife selections, and array of outdoor adventures to help visitors enjoy the gorgeous surroundings. But those golden sands and clear waters of this luxurious beachfront resort in the Algarve region of southern Portugal only help emphasize the unique appeal of this affluent community that works to make every moment one worth celebrating.

The self-contained resort, built as a “residential and holiday development,” offers a seemingly endless list of options for crafting the perfect day — whatever that may look like for you. With 1,500 residential and holiday properties, it welcomes some 750,000 visitors every year and is Portugal’s largest luxury resort. It also holds the distinction of being the region’s first resort, being built in 1962, and it has continued growing its offerings every year to give residents and visitors even more reasons to enjoy waking up there.

RECREATION NATION

Because of its Mediterranean climate, Vale do Lobo enjoys mild winters and warm summers, which makes it the perfect escape for sun worshippers. With 12 hours of sunshine per day in the summer, visitors can fit in a full schedule of outdoor adventures before enjoying the nightlife. Even the winter sees six hours of sunshine, which means that’s plenty of time to get in some outside action.

And fun-and-sun seekers will find plenty of options to choose from, including walking, running, tennis, cycling, football, water sports and more. Indoor fitness enthusiasts can check out the swimming pool, classes at the fitness center, and yoga — for starters.

Of course, with that much sunshine, open space, and fresh air, this was a natural location for a golf course. Vale do Lobo answered the call with two world class golf courses that are befitting the pristine community in which they were built.

A PERFECT PAIR

The flagship course, the Ocean Golf Course, was originally designed by Sir Henry Cotton as a pair of nine-hole courses in 1968 and 1972. The two courses were merged in 1995 and created a spectacular singular challenge with some of the region’s best views.

Its oceanside location offers a naturally beautiful backdrop with some uniquely designed holes. In particular, the 11th and 14th holes are memorable par-4s, while the beachside par-3 15th hole is both gorgeous and challenging. The course’s undulating fairways run alongside a nature reserve before leading players down to the shores of the Atlantic. Playing this course requires hugging the curves and taking time to shape each shot to fit the lay of the land.

The Ocean’s sister course, the Royal Golf Course, enjoys a reputation as one of Portugal’s most prestigious golf courses. American golf architect Rocky Roquemore used the original drawings of Sir Henry Cotton to create the course, which includes the scenic par-3 9th hole that is almost completely surrounded by water and requires a soft, accurate landing to hit the target.

Perhaps its most recognizable hole is No. 16, a hilltop par-3 that offers a full view of the beach and the Algarve coastline. Enjoy the view and take a deep breath before attempting this shot, which needs a short chip to the right for the ball to find its home. And if the wind is against you on this particular day, here’s hoping the odds are in your favor.

Unlike the Ocean, the Royal Golf Course demands straight shots to get the job done. Many of the challenges of the layout come from the very things that make it so beautiful: rolling fairways that wind through pine trees, wildflowers and beautiful lakes.

The memorable experiences don’t have to end when you leave the course; the Clubhouse provides a fun and friendly atmosphere when the game is over. Whether you want to enjoy food and drinks at Spike’s Restaurant and Bar, get some assistance on your golf game, or work out at the fully equipped fitness center, the Clubhouse is the place to be. And even if you’re not playing that day, it’s still a fun place to spend an hour or two just relaxing and enjoying the surrounding gardens.

DINING AND MORE

All the sun, fun, and fitness ensure that you’ll be ready to visit one of the many restaurants and bars in the resort. With cuisines ranging from Japanese to Portuguese, you’ll find plenty of choices and new dishes to try. Whether you’re looking for a casual meal or a fine dining experience, there is plenty to suit your taste.

And if you just want to enjoy some drinks and entertainment, two of the best bets are Julia’s Beach Bar and Lounge, a well-known beach restaurant with live music and breathtaking views, and Monty’s Restaurant Bar, featuring sunset parties, a live DJ and even kids’ entertainment.
