For many high school students, prom is more than a dance. It’s a rite of passage, a night that celebrates growth, self-expression and the excitement of youth, a chance to shine and feel seen. It is a night of anticipation, where each gown, suit, and carefully chosen accessory reflects individuality and marks a personal milestone. Yet for some students, money challenges, health considerations or other personal obstacles can make such an event feel out of reach. In Hawai‘i, The Bella Project has become a beacon of hope, ensuring that every student can participate in these life-affirming occasions with confidence, grace and dignity.
Founded in 2009, The Bella Project was created to address these very challenges. “(The program) centers on access, dignity and inclusion by providing formal attire through a supportive and unique boutique experience,” explains Colleen McAluney, chief program officer of YWCA O‘ahu, which acquired the program in 2023. The initiative began with a simple yet powerful goal: to remove financial and personal barriers so that no student would feel excluded from one of life’s defining celebrations.
Aligned with its mission to empower women at every stage of life, YWCA O‘ahu has expanded The Bella Project’s reach, connecting with teens ages 14 to 18 across Hawai‘i and offering a transformative environment grounded in care, respect and connection. Through this expansion, the program has touched thousands of students, providing them with more than clothing and offering a space where confidence can flourish.

The process at The Bella Project is meticulously designed to support and uplift each student. Volunteers provide one-on-one styling assistance, helping students find formal attire that reflects their unique tastes and personalities. Beyond simply providing complimentary dresses or jumpsuits, the program creates an environment where choice, comfort and self-expression are paramount.
Participation in events like prom has a profound effect on confidence and a sense of belonging. “By removing financial stress, students can focus on the experience itself, which can positively impact confidence, peer relationships, and overall school engagement,” McAluney observes. For many students, the evening becomes a memory they will cherish forever.
The growth and success of The Bella Project are the result of robust partnerships and support from the wider community. Local schools, clothing donors, volunteers and other community partners have all played an essential role in ensuring the program continues to thrive.
Looking to the future, The Bella Project remains committed to enhancing the initiative and expanding its reach across Hawai‘i. “We hope readers see how community support can directly remove barriers and create equitable access to meaningful experiences,” McAluney notes.
Through thoughtful giving and meaningful involvement, The Bella Project continues to transform prom from a distant dream into a night of elegance, joy and belonging.
