Nailed It!
2020 was an interesting year for nails. The temporary closures of nail salons due to the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with the effects of increased handwashing and sanitizers, certainly made a lasting impact on the way we look at our hands.
Flirty and bold DIY pandemic nail trends such as embellished and pre-painted press-on nails are expected to stay and have challenged nail artists to match this rising surge in self-expression. Fun, personal statements that look like actual pieces of art are trending. Expect to see lots of chrome, neon, swirls and gold embellishments. To match those poolside umbrellas and bikinis, nail experts suggest that cocktails of cute vibrant colors will continue to make their way into Instagram feeds.
“With summer ... bright, neon colors are popular,” says Tori Lowry, owner of Miki‘ao Nail Bar. “If you’re not keen on having all 10 fingers with bright colors, think about a natural nail color with a few nails with a pop of color or incorporated in a modern nail design.”
Twists on the classic French manicure are also popular. The timeless pattern is met with color, swirls, gold and jewels.
“French style is always good because the appearance of growth is not as obvious,” says Lowry. “Different French nail trends are those with alternative shapes and colors. For instance, not a traditional smile line—a moon French or straight across French in a neon color.”
No matter what nail art style you choose, healthy cuticles and moisturized skin are the foundation for fabulous nails. Salons suggest that clients prioritize healthy nails and hands just as much as they appreciate a one-of-a-kind painted creation.
“A lot of our clientele are simply looking for clean, cared-for hands and feet,” says Lowry. “The most important products for nail care is moisturization. Especially with all of the hand-washing and sanitizing, your nails can quickly become dry and brittle leaving them prone to breaking. We use Oshan Essentials Kau Oil as a cuticle oil that absorbs easily into your skin and nail beds.”
