Surf and Sentiment

With this issue of HILuxury, we celebrate two things dear to our hearts: mothers and the beach.

And there’s a connection. Really.

Peggy Buchwach, wife of former Advertiser editor Buck Buchwach (the guy who brought me to Hawaii to write a daily column back in 1979, bless him), recalls her teenage son Buzzy asking her when Mother’s Day was.

Oh, how sweet, Peggy thought, he’s thinking ahead about buying a gift for me.

“The second Sunday of May,” she said.

Checking a calendar, seeing that Mother’s Day was indeed soon approaching, Buzzy exclaimed, “Great!”

Peggy couldn’t help asking why he was so unusually excited about Mother’s Day.

“Because,” Buzzy explained, “that’s when the South Shore surf starts to get good!” Indeed it does.

We have some pretty good things in this HILuxury, too, including gift ideas for the moms in your life.

And we head to the beach for a swimsuit fashion shoot, and I think you’ll like Leah Ball’s photos as much as the suits and model Summer Duarte.

We also headed to the North Shore of Maui to talk with windsurfing legend Robby Naish for the cover story. I first covered Robby when he was about 13 and I was at the San Jose Mercury News, and he won a big contest in Berkeley. Robby didn’t invent windsurfing, exactly, but he put it on the map. And he’s done well for himself as a businessman making and selling boards and sails, and today is living his version of “the good life” in his dream house. The thing that has impressed me every time I’ve talked with Robby over the years – including setting up our cover story – is that he’s a good guy, down to earth and genuine. We’re pleased that he joins the list of notable folks who have graced the HILuxury cover.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms.

See you at the beach.
