Skincare labels unleash the potent beautifying power of oils.

PROBLEM SKIN JUST MAY BE AN AFFLICTION OF MODERN TIMES. AS DERMATOLOGIST JULIE KENNER PUTS IT, “CAVEMEN DIDN’T USE soap,” among products that strip the skin of its natural oils and lipid barrier.

Many teens grow up learning that excess oil, or sebum, is a bad thing and spend a lot of time and money trying to get rid of the shine. But over washing can exacerbate problems such as dryness, acne, eczema and rosacea by breaking down the skin’s protective wall.

Think of that wall of skin cells as bricks and the intercellular lipid lamellae between cells serving as the mortar that seals in water and shuts out bacteria and pollutants.

Kenner says, “Replenishing the barrier with oil or cream will help protect skin from over drying.”

The latest slew of beauty goods to hit shelves is actually made with age-gold ingredients. New oil-based products on the market acknowledge ancient wisdom of using Mediterranean olive oil or Argan oil from Morocco as part of a healthy cleansing and moisturizing ritual, from body to hair.

Even so, not all oils are alike, and some oils will clog pores. Kenner suggests looking for non-comedogenic products that do not block pores, or oils with low to no comedogenecy, including almond, avocado, grape seed, jojoba, calendula and safflower oils.
