Home for the Holidays

For more than two decades, Mary Worrall has been wowing guests with her impressive array of Christmas décor.

Most are familiar with real estate maven Mary Worrall, founder of Mary Worrall Associates Sotheby’s International Realty. Now a management consultant with List Sotheby’s International Realty, Worrall shares her expertise, as a born-and-raised kama’aina, with her very lucky clients.

What most people aren’t aware of is Worrall’s penchant for decorating her dwelling come Christmastime. The second-generation Realtor opened up her festive home to us to share her yuletide cheer with HILuxury.

As any good Realtor will tell you, you have to have curb appeal. And, the Christmas spirit spills out through the front door, where a life-sized Santa Claus first greets you. Once inside, friends and family are treated to different spaces, each with its own holiday appeal.

A grand sitting area—complete with working fireplace—is clearly a place for guests to gather, mingle and chat. Christmas trees adorned with ornaments big and small accent the room, which is also decorated with garlands and seasonal flowers.

“My theme is very Victorian. With roses, cupids, crystal and gold ornaments,” Worrall shares.

The effect is actually quite transportive— it does feel like a true Victorian sitting room. The space—painted a light color and surrounded with windows that let in a lot of light—is bright and sunny, without losing that holiday atmosphere.

A long hallway that’s ensconced in dark woods has an altogether different look, yet also very festive. A garland embellished with ornaments serpentines its way up a staircase. The overall feel is warm—you almost expect there to roasted chestnuts and cider.

Three generations make their home at the Worrall residence and the holiday decoration touches them all.

“My daughter and I live together,” Worrall explains. “My daughter Beth, has collected Christopher Radko Santa and Snowman ornaments for years.”

Bringing the entire home together takes some time, and decorating starts months in advance.

“In order to get everything up, we start to decorate [around] October 15,” Worrall says. “My granddaughters say we have no Halloween!”

It’s a tradition that’s more than two decades in the making, so one can imagine the amount of time it takes to arrange everything just perfectly. Better yet, it’s a tradition set in the spirit of the season—giving.

“I started the Christmas decorations about 25 years ago,” Worrall reveals. “We did for Toys and Tots parties for about 10 years. I felt the decorations got everyone in the ‘right’ spirit. For many years, the Marine Corps band was present at our parties; I was told they never play at private property— one year we collected over $10,000 in toys!”

These days, Worrall entertains throughout the holiday season, and those who are well-acquainted with her know that she loves hearts. Located in what is most definitely the heart of the home is a cozy living area anchored by a huge Christmas tree covered in heart ornaments. Many are hostess gifts presented to her by guests.

“I do like hearts, and I am somewhat known for them,” Worrall says. “My heart tree is many years of gifts from many friends.”

Her face beams as she points out the tree and its various coeur-shaped baubles.

The vast ornament and décor collection is more than a tradition unto itself. It has played a role in keeping the family’s holiday traditions alive.

“For many years we did a mother/daughter Christmas tea, the girls had to find one odd ornament in each tree—a fun game for dressed up ‘ladylike’ young girls,” Worrall reminisces.

Understandably, décor of this magnitude— even the pool area twinkles with lights—takes a bit of logistical planning. Pieces will move around the house from year-to-year, but the full effect is always there.

“We are able to put it all out every year, however we change the combinations of ornaments each year and it takes about three weeks to put it all away,” Worrall says.

All tucked away, awaiting next year’s holiday festivities!
