High Expectations

For KakaÊ»ako’s future residents, it seems the only way to go is up.

Part one in HILuxury’s four-part luxury Honolulu condo series.

“Like you are at a resort at the heart of the city,” explains Nick Vanderboom of Howard Hughes Corporation, when asked to describe what living at the 311-unit KakaÊ»ako high-rise Anaha will be like.

“The building itself is modern, but the interiors from the lobby, to the amenities, to the units have a warmth in materials in natural elements: wood, stone metal that strike a balance between a modern building and the surrounding tropical environment,” Vanderboom says.

Designed by Chicago-based Solomon Cordwell Buenz with Honolulu’s Benjamin Woo Architects, Anaha is being built at the corner of Auahi and KamakeÊ»e streets. Due for completion in spring 2017, Anaha will feature 20 penthouses—five per floor—and a final floor of two grand penthouses. Standard penthouses range from $2 million to $6 million. The grand penthouses are priced at $11 million and $14 million. Each penthouse features two to five bedrooms, and at press time, the tower was just over 70 percent sold out.

Vanderboom says the balance of urban and tropical lifestyles is the main draw. The building’s seventh-floor amenity deck goes well beyond the expected pool and grill area. Think sand volleyball courts, a putting green, fitness center, a tennis court, library, a theater, resident lounges, children’s play areas and a glass-bottom pool touting a view seven floors up and 75 feet beneath the swimmer.

“This is the most dramatic pool in Honolulu,” Vanderboom says. “With a glass bottom cantilevered approximately 15 feet off the edge of the building, swimmers will be able to look down to a plaza on the corner of Auahi and KamakeÊ»e streets below, as they float looking out at the ocean.”

The exterior of the building features an undulating glass weave pattern rather than the more standard rectangular planes of a high rise.

“Anaha means ‘reflection of light’ in Hawaiian,” Vanderboom notes.”Which echoes the building’s undulating glass wall. From inside, the units won’t have corners and flat walls, but interesting, continuous views. It’s actually curved glass in corners, which is unique.”

An elaborate water feature at the ground floor entrance will double as a handicap ramp access with a dramatic living wall stretching from the exterior of the building into the lobby. There’s a planned 17,000 square feet of retail slated for the building, anchored by what Vanderboom describes as what will be a “well-known restaurateur.” Developers envision residents being able to walk to stores, restaurants, the movie theater, as well as the Whole Foods scheduled be built directly across from the building.

Taking in all that Ward Village and its surrounding area has to offer is a big part of the lifestyle that Anaha offers its residents. Stellar standard building services include acceptance of deliveries, mail and newspaper pick-up, dry cleaning delivery and coordinating cab service. Expecting guests? Guest Suites are available for owners to rent. Going above and beyond, Anaha will feature concierge services that allow residents to make the most of what a modern island way of life has to offer. There’s the usual coordinating of restaurant, golf and spa reservations. But the concierge will also arrange tennis and SUP lessons, as well as private sessions with a fitness instructor. Or, for the busy professional, there are house-cleaning services, a car pick-up service from the airport and home monitoring (a weekly walk through)—and watering of houseplants!—for when business keeps residents away from the islands. Other offerings include grocery service, coordination of pet sitting/ dog walking and car washing and detailing.

Those are all helpful services to enjoy when one isn’t on property, but residents may not want to travel too far from Anaha with all that Ward Village itself has to offer. There’s the Weekly Yoga Series provided by CorePower Yoga every Thursday at the Ward Village Information Center Courtyard, and the intriguing films screened during Courtyard Cinema, which is a partnership with Hawaii International Film Festival and Consolidated Theaters, that’s held every second Thursday of the month.

Unique shopping opportunities include the KakaÊ»ako Farmers’ Market that’s held every Saturday from 8 a.m. at the Ward Warehouse parking lot, and features the freshest offerings from more than 60 local farmers and artisans; and the very hip Art + Flea Urban Market is every fourth Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. behind Marukai Market, where you’ll find local fashion, art, music, food vendors and more.
