If you’ve read any beauty article, seen a dermatologist or talked on the phone with your concerned mother recently, chances are, you’ve been told about the importance of sunscreen. Protect yourself from damaging UV rays, don’t underestimate the sun even on the cloudiest of days, reapply throughout the day—you’ve heard the spiel. Th e bottom line is sunscreen is necessary (especially if you live in Hawai‘i) and knowing what body, face and makeup products to use and how to get the most out of them are essential. We talk to both skin specialists and sun worshippers alike for their tips on staying safe under the sun.

BODY COVERAGE

At the core of all sunscreen PSAs is the fact that your body needs shielding from the sun’s UV rays to decrease the chances of developing skin cancer. Looks-wise, SPF helps slow down the development of wrinkles and premature aging skin. Skin is the first telltale sign of aging, after all.

As for how often you should apply sunscreen, YC ‘Spring’ Chang, director of spa and recreation at Th e Kahala Hotel & Resort, says once a day is not nearly enough. “At least twice a day is ideal, once in the morning and another layer just before noon when the sun is at its highest point,” Chang says.

Oleema and Kalani Miller, the sister duo behind the popular swimwear line MIKOH, have personal SPF ethos of their own. Oleema, who spends her time out in her vegetable garden or traveling the island when she’s not busy working as the creative director of MIKOH, is faithful to Elta for SPF coverage. “For sunscreen, I always put on Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 rain or shine. Th ey also make an amazing body sunscreen called Elta MD UV Sport that I put all over my body when I’m out for a beach day or just a day in the sun,” she says. Pay attention to that SPF number—a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for everyday activities and SPF 50 if you’re heading out for outdoor activities should do the trick.

FACE SAVERS

“I never leave the house without sunscreen, especially since we spend so much time in tropical places in the heat, salt water, and sun,” says Kalani, whose outdoor lifestyle inspired the inception of MIKOH. Oleema’s itinerary usually ends with major sun time too. If you’re out in sun (be it biking, surfing or beach-bumming) like the Miller sisters, making sure your face is protected from the sun is just as important as covering your body. Taking an extra minute to apply sunscreen to your face prevents brown spots, sunspots and skin discoloration down the road.

When it comes to choosing what kind of sunscreen you use for your face (spray-on, stick, lotion, etc.), you are your best expert. You know your skin and whether it leans toward dry skin, an oilier complexion or a combination of both. To soothe and protect dry skin, try an everyday sunscreen like cream or lotion SPFs that nourishes and moisturizes skin. If combatting an oily complexion is the case, go for a sunscreen that’s ultra-lightweight like the Clinique SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick that protects skin from the aging and burning effects of UVA and UVB rays on fragile areas, then use a refreshing mist (we recommend Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater) on top to set the sunscreen. Don’t forget to give your neck some love too. “Th e key is to put sunscreen not just on your face, but on your neck, chest, and the back of your hands,” Oleema says.

MAKEUP THAT PROTECTS

Last on the list of skin protection is makeup. The age-old dilemma of deciding to opt out of skin protection in the name of long-lasting makeup or deciding to use sunscreen and risk a smudgy, melting makeup situation is no longer a problem. It’s easy to find makeup products that tout SPF on the label, so you officially have no excuse not to incorporate sunscreen into your everyday beauty routine. As for fitting in some extra SPF into your morning regimen, the options are spread across the board. Tinted lip balms, foundations, primers, concealers—if you can dream it up, chances are a SPF-version exists and are often times favored over their non-SPF counterparts.

When it comes to shielding your skin from the sun’s harsh rays, it’s best to follow the rule of “every little bit helps.”

Here’s why: the repair mechanism of your skin tends to slow down as skin ages. Basically, sunburns recover slower and less effectively. “When our skin tries to replenish itself, it has to fight harder if there is actual sun damage,” Chang says. For a product that’s a tried-and-true favorite among beauty editors, try the berry-hued Dior Addict Lip Glow, which packs in SPF to keep lips protected while adding a natural looking flush to lips. The lip tint is also a favorite thanks to its mix of hydrating mango butter and loofah extract. One thing skin experts make a point to reiterate is to reapply any SPF products regularly, especially if it’s makeup. Another layer of that SPF lip balm should go on after a morning breakfast, mid-day coffee break and in-between running chores—and the same rule follows for body and face sunscreens.
