Back in March, Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT) announced the 2014-2015 Opera Season “Life Changing Journeys,” expanded to present four full productions including a contemporary opera, Siren Song, which will be presented in a new venue in Kaka’ako. The season will start in October with Giacomo Puccini’s Madam Butterfly (October 10, 12 and 14) directed by HOT Artistic Director Henry Akina. The timeless story of love and betrayal follows Cio-Cio San (“butterfly” in Japanese) and American Naval Officer Pinkerton. Broadway musical Miss Saigon is a spin-off of this classic and beloved work. Local fashion designer Anne Namba (who worked on The Mikado last season) will design costumes for the production. Next up is Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman (February 13, 15 and 17, 2015). Set along the Norwegian coast, the captain of the ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, is cursed to wander the seas unless he finds a wife that will be true to him—but his chance comes only every 7 years. The contemporary opera Siren Song (March 20, 21, 22, 27 and 28 2015) continues the nautical theme of the season; a young sailor falls in love with a mysterious woman that he has never met—a catfish scandal NCIS episode! The new venue in Kaka’ako for this production will be on e of the revitalized warehouses on Cooke Street that Kamehameha Schools in developing. The season ends with Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (April 24, 26, and 28, 2015) directed by Karen Tiller. The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Blaisdell? Watch out!
