Five of Hawai’i’s storied watermen (well, four, and one waterwoman) were inducted into the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame. A dinner, held at Outrigger Canoe Club honored the accomplishments of John Foti and Jim Foti (world-renowned Outrigger Canoe Racing Ambassadors, five-time Molokai Hoe champs), Tim Guard (four-time Molokai Hoe champ and advocate for Hawai’i’s keiki), Tommy Holmes (co-founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society) and Pokey Watson Richardson (two-time Olympic gold medalist and former swimming world-record holder). The inductees were nominated by their peers for their contribution to ocean sports, commitment to athletics and service to the community—all tributes to the characteristics of the foundation’s namesake, Duke Kahanamoku.
