Hawaii’s arts and industry leaders celebrate the season with their favorite holiday ornaments

Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, Recording Artist

“My maternal grandmother was Norwegian, and I fondly remember Christmas with that side of my family. My grandmother would decorate her tree with intricate Norwegian ornaments and angels, and high atop her Christmas tree sat a beautiful angel in elaborate white material. I’ve been blessed to travel all over the world and collect different ornaments for my tree, but it is incomplete unless an angel sits atop the tree.”

President Chatt G. Wright, Hawaii Pacific University

“My favorite Christmas ornaments are the two ornaments depicting trout. There are four other ornaments that also are my favorites. A Santa Claus and bear fisherman stand out in my mind. My wife, Janice, made the two trout ornaments, along with many other Christmas ornaments that she markets through her company, The Wright Collection. Janice’s company primarily produces Swarovski crystal evening bags for women who attend formal events.”

Anne Namba, Fashion Designer

“My favorite Christmas ornament is actually a stocking. I’ve been designing and making them for more than 16 years now, with each year having a different theme. I have some customers who have collected them since 1993.”

Lokelani Mcmichael, Athlete/Model

“My favorite Christmas ornament is a ‘good luck cat.’ I’ve been called ‘Lucky Loke.’ I think it’s a Japanese or Chinese good fortune cat.”

Philip Rickard, Jewelry Designer

“I suppose many people think about angels during the holidays. For me, angels signify bringing good news and a special uplifting of the spirit. At all the most important transitions in my life, I believe an angel has been there: three close calls with death, the birth of my children, and after many, many other good things. They are not of this world – they’re visitors from a better place – and I think that is why this is my favorite Christmas ornament.

Mary Philpotts, Interior Designer, Philpotts & Associates

“It’s a fanciful, well-dressed monkey. I never met a monkey I didn’t like!”

Dr. Tyrie Jenkins, Pathway To Vision

“I lived in Memphis, Tenn., for five years and became a big Elvis fan. I collect Elvis items – clock, napkin holder, salt and pepper shakers, wine, among other things. A dear friend of mine’s husband made this for me to put on top of the tree. I have many other smaller Elvis ornaments as well, but this one literally tops them all!”
