Working at this publication: privilege or occupational hazard? On one hand, there’s the huge benefit of seeing what’s about to hit stores come the holidays before the rest of the world sees it. But then again, there’s the ensuing black hole that I call credit card debt that occurs immediately after being exposed to the aforementioned bevy of gift ideas, clothing and accessories that I expertly rationalize myself into possibly purchasing. One choice piece is all it takes to send my wallet (and husband) into a tizzy. And I’m only speaking of the tangibles. When it comes to the non-object, experience-driven topics of interest that we have in store for you in this issue… well, falling off the frugal wagon is practically a given.

Then again, it is the holidays after all, and if there’s one time during the year to splurge and go all out, that time is now. From gift giving to holiday feasting, indulgence is certainly on the menu.

Present tense? Our gift guide should put you in good spirits. We’ve put together a comprehensive wish list of sublime finds—from gadgets to golf goods to items that any intrepid traveller will appreciate. And those who insist on travelling in style will enjoy this issue’s car feature. Writer Ed Kemper gives us the ins and outs of the Bentley Continental GT V-8. Slide into the front seat of this ride and experience first class at its sleekest.

Speaking of rides, writer Jordan Kandell got a firsthand look at some of the world’s top kiteboarders during the second annual Virgin Kite Jam on Maui. Between VIP party-hopping and chatting with event big wigs, Kandell is happy to report that this is one event that’s quickly gaining momentum.

Back on O‘ahu, event designer extraordinaire Steven Boyle gets creative with Christmas trees. From classic embellishments to the more avant-garde, he gives us some inventive ideas for decorating and helps put all of us in celebration mode. Meanwhile, writer Wanda Adams was able to get a sentimental peek into how some of us here in Hawai‘i like to celebrate the season, at least from a food perspective. As it turns out, it’s not always about ham and turkey.

In the wine department, we kept Master Sommelier Roberto Viernes plenty busy. Between narrowing down his selection of must-drink wines and touring Ala Moana Center’s newest underground tenant, the uber-exclusive Vintage Cave Honolulu, Viernes certainly has a lot to share.

Looking ahead into the New Year, we’ve come up with a number of fresh starts of our own. As you peruse our pages, you’ll notice some subtle changes here and there—just a few refinements to make HILuxury an even more pleasurable read. Happy holidays from our family to yours!
