editor-200x300 2013—what a year. It seems to me that with every year that passes, the days and weeks accelerate at a rate that leaves me just a wee bit out of breath by the time we ring in the New Year. The world is moving faster than I can tweet. Actually, I don’t even do that… (Feel free to follow my first and last tweet made in 2011 if you don’t believe me.) Thankfully, I’m better at playing catch-up in the real world than updating my status in my virtual one. Whether it really is age or just me being prematurely nostalgic for “the good old days,” the fact is, I’m looking forward to a more toned-down 2014.

While putting this issue together, it seems I wasn’t the only one gunning it this year. Writer Allison Schaefers sits down with two distinguished dynamos: local gal Sherry Menor-McNamara and Hong Kong-based Philippe Schaus. Menor-McNamara breaks all sorts of molds as the new Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii CEO and president, while the DFS Group CEO and chairman was more than a little preoccupied executing the retailer’s rebranding campaign, which launched just a few months ago. Read more about each of them on pages 68 (“Leap of Fate”) and 104 (“En Route to Retail”).

Behind the scenes, photographer Harold Julian and stylist Kyle Kagamida— both officially residing on the mainland as of late—flew back home to Honolulu with camera equipment and runway samples in-hand to create our latest fashion feature. If anyone can turn a snow globe-inspired set into a sumptuous fashion spread, it’s these two creatives. Flip to page 110 for a peek at the season’s most gorgeous.

Aside from those who are hard at work, there’s a lucky handful that have been hard at play—all for their respective crafts, of course. Master sommelier Roberto Viernes, journeys to Italy and gives us a shortlist (and a bit of a crash course) of his preferred varietals from the Veneto region (“Sipping Italian,” page 150). Here in town, Ed Kemper takes the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte for joy ride and gives us a full report on page 80.

As for me, it’s been a whirlwind of colorful sketches, party hosting, assignments that need completing and papers that need signing. And that’s just my life at home (and most of these tasks have to do with my 4-year-old). Here at the office, there are fewer crayons and fortunately, more two-way compromising involved. Here’s to a 2014 that’s equally gratifying, at a pace that’s not too frenetic! I plan on stopping to smell the roses come New Year. Happy holidays!
