Editor’s Letter

IT COULD BE SAID that if there’s one thing that binds everyone in the world, it’s a sense of the seasons. To me, autumn has always been a time of great energy: New winds of change are gusting overhead, while the prospects (and idealism) of a new year loom just over the horizon. Before then, we have plenty to be thankful for: the perfect excuse to redecorate your home with warm colors; travel to destinations where the fall is slightly more evocative than our pristine islands; and the onset of the approaching holiday season.

In this issue of HILuxury, we delve deep in to what embodies the best of fall. First, just flip through the illustrious pages that follow; you’ll notice deep, earthy colors and golden tinges – which truly embody the season.

Next, soak in our travel destination features: a fantasy jaunt to one of our European castles, teeming with ancient history yet overflowing with modern elegance. A bit closer to home, Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort in the Timpanogo Mountain range of Utah is a giant swath of autumnal colors, with all the accoutrements you could possibly desire (a luxurious spa, an award-winning restaurant, fly fishing, hiking and mountain biking). Perhaps your idea of fall is a jaunt to our own Mount Hualalai and a Buddhist-inspired inn set on a 30-acre coffee farm.

Breathe in the vibe of our culinary features, which focus on that “other” white meat and all its glory. We pair that with a section on bartenders who are going the distance to pair cocktails with food items – just as our resident master sommelier Roberto Viernes tackles the ins of mature wines.

Of course, we can’t forget that fall means back to school – and school reminds us of the importance of guiding the next generation. Enter our cover story subject: The single most medal-earning Winter Olympian in history, Apolo Ohno. Our exclusive interview with Ohno and his father Yuki at Maui’s Grand Wailea Resort & Spa led not only to an impromptu photo shoot, but to the knowledge that this individual shines as much off the winners’ podium as he does while on it.

Ohno (who began, he admits, as a “hard-headed youth”) sets an example we all should aspire to: using his influence and position as an accomplished athlete to sway kids away from poor decision-making. In fact, his dedication to the effort has waltzed him right to the White House.

Whether you take from this issue the inspiration to swap out your throw pillows for something a bit richer, or to get involved with something as life-changing as Dr. Brad Wong’s global Aloha Medical Missions – or somewhere in between – we hope the winds of change push you in a luxurious direction this season.

With Aloha,

Brian Berusch
