Skyla, a 17-year-old wish kids from the Big Island, recently visited O‘ahu to see her doctor, and got a surprise pre-wish musical experience at Honolulu Community College.

Diagnosed with lupus at 13 years old, Skyla has undergone a battle that no teenager should have to face. But through it all, music has remained a source of hope for her; it has gotten her through the hardest of times and has inspired her to keep fighting.

John Vierra, MELE’s program coordinator, took Skyla on a tour of the studios where she got behind the mic and recorded “Drops of Jupiter” with the help of his students. The amazing experience was just the first step of her one true wish to have a recording experience in New York City!

“Today was like Cinderella after the ball wondering if it was all a dream,” recounts Skyla’s mother, May. “I always thought a wish would be cool, but now I understand the restorative power of a wish. It has been a battle since she was diagnosed, and this weekend, I saw a glimpse of her old self. To truly see her happy, confident and smiling was a huge gift, and I want to thank you.”
