Eva’s fantasy world comes to life.

Eva didn’t need to think twice about her wish: To meet a unicorn. Where are unicorns found? In Hawai‘i, of course! “She heard somewhere that’s where unicorns are from,” says mom Shannon. The wish-granters at Make-A-Wish in Arizona kept double-checking with the 4-year-old, who’s battling acute lymphoid leukemia, to ensure that meeting a unicorn is what she wanted.

“She’s one of those; once she sets her mind on something, she doesn’t change her mind,” Shannon explains.

So, Eva’s wish granters were equally determined to make her wish come true. Eva and Shannon were flown to Hawai‘i, but Eva had no idea what a fantastical turn her trip would take.

Working with the Make-A-Wish Hawaii wish-granters, the team created an entire adventure, through the world called Wishtopia. The entire wish was based on a book, The Legend of the Hair Fairies written by Carole Folkert, one of Eva’s caregivers.

Th e Royal Hawaiian was transformed into the land of Wishtopia, populated by fairies and Queens Meadow and Ember. Eva, a princess of Wishtopia, was tasked with restoring "Strength, Love, Joy and Hope" to Wishtopia. She did this by journeying through the enchanted forest and helping the tulip, rose, sunflower and a butterfly. After each task, Eva was gifted with a bloom accompanied by a message of encouragement. Once harmony was restored, Wishtopia’s cherished unicorn would return.

Once the unicorn returned, Eva did more than meet it—she rode around on it!

“Her genuine reaction of wonder and joy uplifted everyone involved,” says Make-A-Wish Hawaii COO Amy Sterry. After her adventures in Wishtopia, Princess Eva went to afternoon tea with her family and Queens Meadow and Ember.

“I’m just really grateful to Make-A-Wish for making it happen for her,” Shannon says. “It’s something she’ll never forget. She still talks about it all the time. She tells everyone she went to Hawai‘i and met a unicorn. Th ey paid attention to every single detail.”
