Carlos scores the ultimate goal.

After fighting through leukemia and graduating from high school, Carlos wanted to reward himself by doing what he loves the most—soccer.

Diagnosed in 2013, Carlos’ family had to cope with yet another family member with the same condition. Carlos’ brother was diagnosed with leukemia before him, so they knew what to expect, but, of course, “it was hard to have to go through it again,” says Amelia, Carlos’ mom.

Carlos' dedication at FC Barcelona's soccer camp in Charlotte, N.C. was reflective of his dedication to push through his condition. However, the wish-granting didn't end there: Carlos and his family were further surprised with a trip to the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Carlos prevailed, and when he was deemed healthy enough, he was ready to have his wish granted. Over the summer, Carlos was given the dream opportunity to train at the FC Barcelona soccer camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, in honor of his favorite soccer club.

A grueling week of soccer training from sunup until sundown, Carlos took the experience in with so much passion and eagerness to hone his skills. His dedication to get the most out of soccer camp was unstoppable.

“Despite [the fact that] he was covered in hives—allergies—he wanted to go to camp every day, and he powered through it, because he just loved camp so much,” Amelia recounts.

When Carlos thought that nothing could beat his experience at camp, we had an even bigger surprise waiting for him. Carlos was even more in awe when he found out that he, along with his family, were going to attend the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup!

“He started to cry—tears of happiness, of course,” and this became his favorite part of the trip.

Amelia believes that, wish experiences like this, “gives them [wish kids] more con° dence to push through whatever they’re going through.” Personally, they grew closer as a family, and were able to see how they could best support Carlos through his recovery.

Carlos has grown stronger from this experience, and has gained many new friends—including soccer coaches from Spain and his teammates from camp.
