About The Setting

In this issue, the HILuxury team spent a day at the museum—Bishop Museum. Dedicated to studying and preserving the history of Hawai’i and the Pacific, Bishop Museum was originally designed to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a descendent of King Kamehameha I. The museum is now the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific. It holds millions of artifacts, documents and photos about Hawai’i and other Polynesian cultures.

Our model explored the Picture Gallery—one of the first three exhibits at the museum when it opened in 1891—and the newly renovated Pacific Hall, which immerses visitors in the vast island family of Oceania by showcasing a variety of important artifacts. One of O’ahu’s most historic places, Bishop Museum is also home to the Jhamandas Watumull Planetarium, Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center and a vast library and archives.

Bishop Museum is closed every Tuesday and on Christmas Day (December 25th), but is open year round with regular hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more about the Bishop Museum at
