When Kayle Osai was a year old, his mother, Melissa, insisted her son receive genetic testing she felt something was not right. Kayle’s tests showed that he had a chromosome 17 deletion and duplication including Carney complex— a condition that puts individuals at an increased risk of developing benign tumors in the heart and other parts of the body. Due to his condition, Kayle has received numerous medical procedures at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Kayle will need to be monitored for tumors for the rest of his life. His medical condition has also contributed to other health challenges, including hearing impairment, global developmental delay, autism and scoliosis.

Now 9, Kayle is doing extremely well. “Kayle is an amazing young boy who has endured more than anyone should in his lifetime. He always has a smile, a wave ‘hi,’ ‘aloha’ or hug to give out,” Melissa says.

Kayle has been named Hawai‘i’s 2018 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion. He will serve as an ambassador, highlighting the important work that children’s hospitals—like Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children—do within their communities.

“I think Kayle’s a perfect example of Kapi‘olani’s comprehensive efforts because he is medically complex,” says Dr. Jeremy King, pediatric gastroenterologist. “A lot of different specialists have to coordinate their care to have a good outcome. We work together in order to achieve that.”

“Kayle and his parents are really great champions for Kapi‘olani,” adds Dr. Russell Woo, pediatric surgeon. “Kayle struggles with so many medical issues and requires so much care, but when we see them, they’re so positive and they’re always calm. It’s really amazing how strong the Osai family is in the face of so much adversity.”

“In many ways, we get as much from the relationship that we give,” Woo continues. “To see Kayle have that kind of positivity and strength facing those types of challenges definitely makes it worthwhile. It reminds all of us why it’s meaningful to do this and it gives us an example of how we can live our own lives.”
